On Saturday, I finally stopped at two cars on the side of Dexter Ann Arbor Road that I’ve been passing for months. I picked the worse day to do it, 40˚ and raining. But finding a car is all about timing and it was time.

The first stop was the Miata. Burgundy with a beige top would indicate one of the limited editions, but the wheels were wrong. The LEs usually have BBS wheels. Huh. Maybe somebody traded them away or they were sitting in the garage. Or maybe the car was originally red, repainted burgundy, needed a new top, had rust through the rockers, looked a whole lot worse the closer I got. $3,800 or best offer. I offer to look elsewhere.

The IROC is one of those cars from my teenage years that holds some appeal. It’s not a classic now but soon the 80’s will come around. The car had a low 43K miles and was not driven in the winter. But it was an automatic, had enough “fancy it faster” add-ons like louvers, exhaust, shifter, tinted windows, kicker box that detract from clean original, side-of-the-road find. The longer the grass got the lower the price went. I should have known. They started asking $10,000 and are down to $7,800. Before snowfall it’ll most likely be back in the barn for another season.
