Restoration Wednesday

The bracket trapped dirt and sand that rusted it.

The car is actually very clean and solid underneath.

Update: Got the filter off, it was dated 1992.

Before and after.

First order of business was to change the fuel filter on the S4 so it’ll run consistently and move around easier.  I suspected crud had been pulled through the bottom of the tank and clogged flow to the motor.  What I didn’t expect was a completely rotten tank bracket filled with sand that fell apart in my hands.  Everything needed to be scrapped and scary enough, the hose clamps were rusted through and fell off as well.  New fuel line will be in order which means a messy process of dropping gas from the tank.

The replacement tank bracket and fuel filter hatch plate were powder coated black yesterday and are ready for install.  However, I still haven’t been able to crack the filter loose so I soaked it overnight in penetrating fluid.  I’ll be back at it today or tomorrow as time permits.

In the meantime, I hand polished a pair of 5 1/2J  x 14″ Fuchs (with Mother’s Mag and Aluminum Polish) from 1969 that were laying around the shop.  They were off of the 911T.  The other half of the set were date stamped 1976 so I’m selling them in two matched sets as opposed to a set of four rims.  I replaced the mismatched set on the car with 15″ Fuchs that I bought off of Craigslist last summer before I even owned the car.

This is how we do it.  Sell parts, buy cars.  Buy parts, fix cars.  Drive cars, store cars, look at them real pretty and all.  Sell cars.  Rinse repeat.
