Gentleman racers of yesterday started out as six figure cars in today’s dollars that were unattainable. Post-war prices slowly moved downhill to the enthusiast level but racing wasn’t the profession it is today. People with a passion would fund a modest Triumph or MG with another job before being offered salary positions with teams. And even if they were factory sponsored, it was still difficult to make ends meet. Drivers often had to keep their second job. The 50s and 60s were a special era of motor racing history. The birthplace of inspiration for a generation who huddled next to a hay bail watching vehicles fly by that were also for sale at the corner garage.
The Huet Brothers have channeled that inspiration into a new kind of sports coupe the HB Coupe RR. Where a Triumph or MG was as best a windshield with an umbrella to protect you from the elements, the HB is a closed coupe. It is a full carbon monocoque which will never rust with heated front and rear window built around modern BMW engines and drivetrains. The one I like the best is the turbo diesel four mated to a six speed manual transmission. It’ll run a 0-60 in 5.3 seconds and set you back an estimated $70K. Take this puppy to the hill climb, the winter rally or the race track. It’s built to last while being serviced anywhere. Not quite Miata or Subaru BRZ pricing but styling throwback has long been needed in this segment. I love it.
