1957 BMW 501 Sedan

I like to believe I’m a purist.  I maintain cars to original whenever possible and keep the driving dynamics intended by the engineers during pencil and paper.   If worn out bushings need to be replaced, I’ll use the same ol’ rubber instead of upgrading.   That being said, I like to spin stylistically.  If it’s not original paint to begin with then move to have some fun is what I say.  This 501 would be fun.

I first saw a 501 in Germany in 1989 visiting my father’s cousin with my dad on way to the Frankfurt Auto Show.  Cousin had a house and barn tucked in a small village.  As a high school shop teacher, he practiced what he preached by rebuilding and rewiring the house while stacking the barn with project cars, scooter and motorcycles.  On occasion he have his students over to his work shop for on-location lessons.  He owned a 501.  From what I remember it has a cracked head and was awaiting repair.

Picture this suicide door sedan with fresh chrome, wire wheels and two-tone paint (deep blue and silver maybe) to accent the sweeping fender lines.  The interior dash looks largely original so a recover of the fabrics and carpet would give it a nice finish.  Finally, a 1000 watt, twelve speaker, cross over system anchored by a shit kickin’ base box that takes up the entire trunk.
